The Western Coatings Symposium and Show gave suppliers an opportunity to meet in-person with existing and potential customers. For many this was the first in-person show since the COVID-19 pandemic. Both exhibitors and attendees were generally pleased with the quality and turn-out of the conference and show.
Here is a look at the offerings of key suppliers.
Arkema:
Arkema showcased the company’s full range of Coating Materials and expertise for coatings formulators at the WCS. Projects on display included recent innovations dedicated to waterborne, UV/LED/EB and high solids technologies. Arkema leaders also presented on a range of topics, including a keynote address entitled “The Future of Sustainability in the Coatings Industry.”
“At least 25 percent of the presentations scheduled for the Western Coatings Show this year will be discussing some aspect of sustainability,” Chris Miller, senior global research director for coatings at Arkema, explained. “As we meet throughout the week – and well beyond the event – it is important for leaders and experts in the industry to do more than discuss the importance of sustainability. We need companies to showcase and promote the knowledge, the products and technologies they are developing and implementing today that are driving the industry toward a more sustainable future.”

Among the products being promoted by Cathay Industries USA was CathayCoat, a premium range of iron oxides used for top coating and fine-quality products like paint, plastics and paper.
CathayCoat can be divided into four subcategories:

EPS 2533/EPS 2843 resins are used for universal primers applied to wood and industrial metal. EPS 2533 and EPS 2843 are styrenated acrylic emulsions that provide paint formulators with a waterborne alternative to solvent-based primers. These polymers are ideal for use as a universal primer or low-gloss topcoat on ferrous and non-ferrous metal, as well as cementitious, wood and plastic substrates.

EPS 4216 is an oxidizing polyurethane dispersion designed to provide very fast dry, hardness development and chemical resistance. Primary end uses are for residential wood flooring and other wood substrates where alcohol and household chemical resistance are important.
Heubach:
Heubach showcased its recently launched HEUCOFLASH LQ1 and LQ2 flash rust inhibitors.
HEUCOFLASH LQ1 is a Nitrite containing, VOC free flash rust inhibitor, suitable for all ferrous and galvanized steel substrates and waterborne resins like acrylic or epoxy systems etc.. The product is a ready to use aqueous liquid and typical dosage rates are between 0.3 % - 1.5 % (of liquid coating weight) depending on the binder system and the surface roughness and can be added during the manufacturing steps simply by stirring in.
HEUCOFLASH LQ2 is a Nitrite and VOC free liquid flash rust inhibitor suitable for all kind of metal substrates and a wide range of waterborne resins. HEUCOFLASH™ LQ2 is a ready to use aqueous liquid and dosage rates are also in the range of 0.3 % - 1.5 % (of liquid coating weight) to address different binders and the roughness of the surface.
These newly introduced HEUCOFLASH products are an addition to the anti-corrosive pigment portfolio of HEUBACH Group.
Keim Additec Surface USA:
Leaders from Keim Additec Surface USA were on-had to promote the company’s new rebranding concept.
“A key objective and major reason to exhibit at the 35th Biennial Western Coatings Societies Symposium and Show was to promote our new rebranding logic,” said Keith Condon, national sales director. “The new rebranding logic consists of shifting from local brands towards global power brands; and a Green Approach. All products offered will have a very high regulatory stature, such as Prop 65, FDA, EU, China, Swiss Ordinance. These very high regulatory statures will set us apart from other manufacturers. Our products are readily available, a viable and reliable source.”

At the WCS Lubrizol displayed a number of dispersion solutions for paint, coatings and graphic arts. According to the company, Solsperse Hyperdispersant technology is an essential ingredient for advanced performance in paint, coating and graphic art formulations. The technology enables the production of highly loaded, highly stable, broadly compatible dispersions in almost any combination of solid particles and continuous phases (liquid or solid). This dispersant technology combines polymeric stabilizing chains selected for solubility in a given solvent and/or resin combination, with anchor groups optimized for strong adsorption to the particle surface, where the dosage is determined by the particle’s surface area. This technology allows the production of sterically stabilized dispersions with higher solids content, lower viscosity, and improved viscosity and particle size stability compared to dispersions made using resins or lower molecular weight dispersants or surfactants.

MPI showcased its micronized wax powders products at the show.

Orion Engineered Carbons S.A.:
Orion displayed its latest innovations in specialty carbon black, emphasizing its comprehensive portfolio of specialty grades for a wide variety of coatings system: ultra-high-jet pigments for ultimate black coatings, highly UV-stable grades for color preservation in decorative coatings and a broad range of jetness values and undertones for industrial coatings.
“Orion offers among the highest-jet carbon blacks on the market, for the deepest black in any coating application,” said Sandra Niewiem, senior vice president, Global Specialty Carbon Black and EMEA Region, at Orion. “We continue to strive for the ultimate black, and experienced technicians in the company’s ‘super black’ lab have achieved an impressive 99.98% light absorption value.”

Pan Technology:
Pan Technology showcased the latest advancements in its PanULTRA easy dispersible powder pigment preparations.
PanULTRA Powder Pigment Preparations – Powder pigment preparations generally provide greater strength, transparency and gloss than comparable liquid dispersions. This is most apparent with high performance organic pigments, transparent iron oxide and high color carbon black. They are 100% solids and do not bring any additional VOCs into the end application.
For Solvent Applications:
PanTINT 11: Vinyl co-polymer chip dispersions for use in manufacturing ink jet, vinyl inks, and coatings. PanTINT 11 vinyl chip dispersions are also available in solution as ready-to-use inks, UniFILM 54 and PanCRYL 52 HAPS-free.
PanTINT 12: Acrylic chip dispersions for use in solventborne and radiation cured coatings and inks are based on a unique modified thermoplastic acrylic resin with exceptionally broad compatibility. The carrier resin is readily soluble in ketones, aromatics, esters and glycol ethers for easy incorporation in most high performance solvent borne coatings. It is sufficiently soluble in acrylate monomer to allow their use in UV and EB cured coatings. Typical applications include high performance industrial finishes, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, and cabinet finishes.
For Aqueous Applications:
PanTINT Ultimate 2: Water soluble chip dispersions are granulated for ease of handling and incorporation with minimal dusting. They can be easily incorporated in most aqueous coatings and inks with simple mechanical mixing for 5 to 10 minutes using high sheer disperser, paddle mixer or paint shaker. They are resin-free for exceptionally broad compatibility, and are environmentally friendly with no solvents, VOC’s, APE’s or other hazardous ingredients. Pigment particle size has been reduced to less than 0.5 micron for use in high performance applications including industrial coatings, automotive refinish and ink jet inks.
PanTINT 18: Water Soluble Acrylic chip dispersions can be used to formulate water based inks and coatings which require excellent transparency and gloss. These chips are soluble in aqueous systems at a pH of 9 or higher. Co-solvents such as alcohols may also be used to improve the rate of solution. Typical applications include high performance industrial finishes, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, and cabinet finishes. PanTINT 18 Chip Dispersions are available in chip form or in solution as PanTINT 95 liquid dispersions.
Pilot Chemical Company:
Pilot showcased its extensive variety of diphenol oxide disulfonates, sulfonic acids, sodium sulfonates, alcohol sulfates and alcohol ether sulfates. Pilot’s products are available in liquid, dry flake and paste form. They are used in paint, coatings, rubber, latex, adhesives and other polymer manufacturing applications. Calfax is low foaming during production, which simplifies product transfer.
Shamrock Technologies:
Representatives from Shamrock promoted its HydroCER and AquaFLON series of products, designed to incorporate wax and PTFE in a dispersed form ranging from submicron emulsions to high solid powder dispersions.
“Shamrock was pleased to participate in the Western Coatings Symposium, “ said Ron Levitt, director of sales, Americas at Shamrock Technologies. “Turnout to the booth was steady over the three days at the conference and we were fortunate to generate quite a few new opportunities with our customers. We presented our HydroCER and AquaFLON series which are designed to incorporate wax and PTFE in a dispersed form ranging from submicron emulsions to high solid powder dispersions. They are designed to provide controlled slip, abrasion resistance and release. Shamrock also introduced our bio-based waxes. The HydroCER AE-30BC is a biobased carnauba modified beeswax emulsion that provides a powerful reduction in coefficient of friction and substantial increase in abrasion resistance all while maintaining excellent clarity and sheen stability in various coatings and inks. Our HydroCER AE-35B is a biobased beeswax emulsion that also provides a powerful reduction in coefficient of friction and substantial increase in abrasion resistance while maintaining excellent clarity and superior gloss while providing improved durability and slip.
Siltech:
Among its product offerings, Siltech showcased Silmer TMS products which are trialkoxy silane-modified silicones. These unique silane/silicone polymer hybrids provide improvement to water repellency, stain protection, adhesion and feel to many systems.
The company was pleased with the level of attendance and quality of the show.
“I haven’t heard the official attendance, but it was a busy show with a lot of booth traffic and good discussions,” said Robert Ruckle, global marketing and sales director at Siltech. “I know their historic high was 1,513 attendees in 2019, and I won’t be surprised to hear that the number is quite close to that. I think everyone is probably expressing the sentiment that it is nice to have face to face idea trading venues back. That’s because it is nice.”
Troy Corp:
Troy showcased a number of its innovative products and services at the Western Coatings Show.
Troy Performance Additives enable coatings manufacturers to develop formulated products that meet the demanding requirements of their customers. Troy Performance Additives include wetting additives, which promote surface wetting and enhance coating appearance; dispersing additives, which improve pigment color development; rheological additives, which improve application, reduce pigment setting and provide resistance to sagging; and defoaming additives, which improve air release during production and application. This is most apparent with high performance organic pigments, transparent iron oxide and high color carbon black. They are 100% solids and do not bring any additional VOCs into the end application.
For Solvent Applications:
PanTINT 11: Vinyl co-polymer chip dispersions for use in manufacturing ink jet, vinyl inks, and coatings. PanTINT 11 vinyl chip dispersions are also available in solution as ready-to-use inks, UniFILM 54 and PanCRYL 52 HAPS-free.
PanTINT 12: Acrylic chip dispersions for use in solventborne and radiation cured coatings and inks are based on a unique modified thermoplastic acrylic resin with exceptionally broad compatibility. The carrier resin is readily soluble in ketones, aromatics, esters and glycol ethers for easy incorporation in most high performance solvent borne coatings. It is sufficiently soluble in acrylate monomer to allow their use in UV and EB cured coatings. Typical applications include high performance industrial finishes, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, and cabinet finishes.
For Aqueous Applications:
PanTINT Ultimate 2: Water soluble chip dispersions are granulated for ease of handling and incorporation with minimal dusting. They can be easily incorporated in most aqueous coatings and inks with simple mechanical mixing for 5 to 10 minutes using high sheer disperser, paddle mixer or paint shaker. They are resin-free for exceptionally broad compatibility, and are environmentally friendly with no solvents, VOC’s, APE’s or other hazardous ingredients. Pigment particle size has been reduced to less than 0.5 micron for use in high performance applications including industrial coatings, automotive refinish and ink jet inks.
PanTINT 18: Water Soluble Acrylic chip dispersions can be used to formulate water based inks and coatings which require excellent transparency and gloss. These chips are soluble in aqueous systems at a pH of 9 or higher. Co-solvents such as alcohols may also be used to improve the rate of solution. Typical applications include high performance industrial finishes, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, and cabinet finishes. PanTINT 18 Chip Dispersions are available in chip form or in solution as PanTINT 95 liquid dispersions.
Pilot Chemical Company:
Pilot showcased its extensive variety of diphenol oxide disulfonates, sulfonic acids, sodium sulfonates, alcohol sulfates and alcohol ether sulfates. Pilot’s products are available in liquid, dry flake and paste form. They are used in paint, coatings, rubber, latex, adhesives and other polymer manufacturing applications. Calfax is low foaming during production, which simplifies product transfer.
Shamrock Technologies:
Representatives from Shamrock promoted its HydroCER and AquaFLON series of products, designed to incorporate wax and PTFE in a dispersed form ranging from submicron emulsions to high solid powder dispersions.
“Shamrock was pleased to participate in the Western Coatings Symposium, “ said Ron Levitt, director of sales, Americas at Shamrock Technologies. “Turnout to the booth was steady over the three days at the conference and we were fortunate to generate quite a few new opportunities with our customers. We presented our HydroCER and AquaFLON series which are designed to incorporate wax and PTFE in a dispersed form ranging from submicron emulsions to high solid powder dispersions. They are designed to provide controlled slip, abrasion resistance and release. Shamrock also introduced our bio-based waxes. The HydroCER AE-30BC is a biobased carnauba modified beeswax emulsion that provides a powerful reduction in coefficient of friction and substantial increase in abrasion resistance all while maintaining excellent clarity and sheen stability in various coatings and inks. Our HydroCER AE-35B is a biobased beeswax emulsion that also provides a powerful reduction in coefficient of friction and substantial increase in abrasion resistance while maintaining excellent clarity and superior gloss while providing improved durability and slip.
Siltech:
Among its product offerings, Siltech showcased Silmer TMS products which are trialkoxy silane-modified silicones. These unique silane/silicone polymer hybrids provide improvement to water repellency, stain protection, adhesion and feel to many systems.
The company was pleased with the level of attendance and quality of the show.
“I haven’t heard the official attendance, but it was a busy show with a lot of booth traffic and good discussions,” said Robert Ruckle, global marketing and sales director at Siltech. “I know their historic high was 1,513 attendees in 2019, and I won’t be surprised to hear that the number is quite close to that. I think everyone is probably expressing the sentiment that it is nice to have face to face idea trading venues back. That’s because it is nice.”
Troy Corp:
Troy showcased a number of its innovative products and services at the Western Coatings Show.
Troy Performance Additives enable coatings manufacturers to develop formulated products that meet the demanding requirements of their customers. Troy Performance Additives include wetting additives, which promote surface wetting and enhance coating appearance; dispersing additives, which improve pigment color development; rheological additives, which improve application, reduce pigment setting and provide resistance to sagging; and defoaming additives, which improve air release during production and application. In addition to Performance Additives, Troy has a full range of driers for a wide range of systems including loss-of-dry inhibitors and anti-skinning additives.
