PPG announced that it has completed a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES project at Multipurpose Centre Lumo, a cultural and learning center in Vantaa, Finland. The project brought together 25 volunteers, who transformed Lumo’s lobby area into a colorful and inspiring space.
The project was carried out in collaboration with the City of Vantaa, which owns the center. Lumo houses a city library and high school, as well as sports and cultural facilities. It serves as an important community meeting place and is located close to PPG’s site in Vantaa. The center attracts more than 500,000 visitors a year.
The central work of the project is “The Charm of the Forest,” a mural designed by local artist Andrea Puscasu. The mural brings Finnish nature to the walls of Lumo and is designed to reflect the diversity of the space and the recreational opportunities it offers. The wall colors were selected by Irina Hanhisalo, PPG color category manager, Architectural Coatings.
The company provided 18 gallons (70 liters) of TIKKURILA® paint by PPG for the project. Products included Tikkurila Luja 7 paint, which contains an anti-mold agent that protects the paint film. The product has a low-VOC emission level and is certified by both Nordic Swan Ecolabel and EU Ecolabel.
“About a week before PPG contacted us, we were sitting in Lumo, thinking about how we could make the lobby more welcoming,” said Riikka Åstrand, deputy mayor of the City of Vantaa. “PPG’s offer came as if made to order. It was not difficult to choose the space to be painted by the volunteers. A warm thank you to PPG for the fast and smoothly executed project – the end result is excellent.”
“The City of Vantaa has always been an important partner for us. We have worked together in many different ways, but this was the first Colorful Communities project we carried out together,” said Meri Vainikka, PPG vice president, EMEA North & East and China, Architectural Coatings. “At PPG, we know paint, which is why it is natural for us to bring joy and color to the surrounding communities thought projects like this.”
