Akzo Nobel launches furniture coatings



Akzo Nobel’s powder coating business unit has launched a powder coating brand exclusively dedicated to the furniture market. Branded Interpon F, the range brings to the market both a step-change in technical performance and a range of colors designed especially for the furniture market.

To meet the technical requirements of the market Akzo launched two new ranges, for interior (Interpon F1000) and exterior (Interpon F1500) applications. Scratching is a major problem in the furniture industry, both during transportation and use, and market-leading scratch resistance is the major improvement seen in these new products, according to the company. Interpon F is available in Contemporary and Trend varieties.

Henkel's new corrosion-resistant coatings


For light metal substrates, Henkel Corporation has developed a multifunctional base coating, Alodine EC2 ElectroCeramic Coating, designed to provide chemical, corrosion, temperature and abrasion resistance while reducing parts processing costs. This high temperature resistant coating is designed to extend the life of parts exposed to harsh operating conditions, delivering titanium ceramic toughness and durability on lower cost substrates.

Based on titanium electrodeposited oxides, Alodine EC2 readily coats aluminum, aluminum alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, as well as aluminized, aluminum-plated and IVD aluminum substrate. The coating is also suitable for aluminized ferrous materials. This base coating can improve the corrosion resistance and performance of marine engines, automotive powertrain and components, appliances, cookware and a variety of other industrial parts exposed to moisture, fuel, oil and other environmental contaminants.


ICA Group has recently unveiled its new coating products with high residual-solid content, which are particularly suitable for the coating of interiors and parquet floors.
ICA’s new range of solvent-based polyurethane coatings



Italy-based ICA Group has unveiled a new range of solvent-based poly­urethane coatings with high specific-solid content for the coating of interiors and parquet floors. These coatings are designed to give wooden surfaces not only a high level of protection but also an excellent aesthetic finish.

These products feature a high residual-solid content—between 65% and 72%—and are free from aromatic organic solvents. Their extensive coverage enables them to eliminate one of the coats within the coating cycle, thus allowing for cost reductions. They also do not require the addition of a diluting agent during application, and this results in a reduction in solvent emissions. Moreover, these coatings do not contain toxic solvents such as toluene or xylene, and so they comply fully with EU directive 2004/42/CE.

The solvent-based polyurethane coatings with high solid content for interior decor designed by ICA Group include FP510 base coat, OP511G20 and OP511G40 top coats and LP513 gloss topcoat.

In addition, ICA Group has also created a range of high specific-solid content coatings for parquet floors. The range is composed of FP274TX base coat and OP600, OP601 and OP602 top coats with gloss levels of 30, 40 and 60 gloss, respectively.

Power Adhesives introduces the VAC-TAC adhesive system



Power Adhesives introduces the VAC-TAC adhesive system for a faster, safer, solvent-free adhesive system for composite companies utilizing vacuum infusion technology. Compared to traditional aerosol adhesive systems commonly used in the vacuum infusion process, the VAC-TAC System is more economical and helps composite companies lower VOC output, according to the company. The system is ideal for securing and positioning reinforcement materials and is said to overcome traditional problems usually associated with aerosol adhesive systems. The VAC-TAC system allows building the composite structures faster than alternative methods to save time and reduce production costs. Since the system is solvent-free, health and safety issues are also eliminated.

Zinsser introduces Okon Graffiti Barrier Coat



Zinsser has introduced Okon Graffiti Barrier Coat, a ready to use high performance coating that prevents paints and markers from penetrating and permanently staining a variety of sealed architectural surfaces. The clear, non-yellowing, water-based formula forms an invisible protective barrier on interior and exterior, painted and unpainted surfaces that makes graffiti easy to remove.

Low VOC and low odor, Okon Graffiti Barrier Coat is formulated with a single-component, self-crosslinking acrylic that makes it easier to use compared to two-component anti-graffiti products. It is ideal for use on concrete block, brick, stone, metal, wood, fiberglass, aggregate panels, cast concrete, EIFS, cement plaster, stucco, new paint and previously painted surfaces.

Easy to apply by roller or spray, Okon Graffiti Barrier Coat can be recoated in 1-2 hours. It goes on milky-white and dries clear to a satin or semi-gloss finish. Depending on the substrate, two to three coats are recommended for maximum graffiti protection.

Sherwin-Williams introduces ExpressCote HCR



Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings has introduced ExpressCote HCR, a chemical resistant glass flake-filled epoxy novolac lining. It is specifically designed to protect steel and concrete from chemicals and solvents at ambient and elevated temperatures for the petrochemical, waste water, power generation and marine markets.

Compared to conventional epoxy coatings, ExpressCote HCR offers a rapid return to service, allowing return to full service in as little as 24 hours and walk-on condition within five hours when applied at 77ºF/50%RH. This 100% solids epoxy has no volatile organic compounds, and offers one-coat protection up to 50 mils and edge retention exceeding 70%.

Greenstone introduces Magneline StairSaf-T and GreenShield Sillpro



Greenstone Holdings, Inc. has introduced MagneLine StairSaf-T, a method that utilizes specially designed polymer cement mortar to protect metal stairs such as fire escapes and ladders on high-rise buildings and pedestrian crossing bridges from rust and corrosion, and also to add traction making it harder to slip under slippery conditions.

The company has also introduced a new GreenShield product, Sillpro, which can be brushed onto wooden windows, door sills and other components to protect them from moisture and water penetration. Once it is applied it can be painted or stained.

PPG Adds Ditzler Big Flake Pigments to Vibrance Collection Finishes



PPG Industries’ automotive refinish business recently introduced Ditzler Big Flake pigments to its Vibrance Collection finishes line of custom colors and special effect coatings. Ditzler Big Flake pigments comprise six large, metallic flakes that produce a “retro” look when added to a basecoat or clearcoat finish. The new Ditzler Big Flake pigments are available in silver, gold and four color-shifting options—green to purple, blue to red, red to gold and gold to silver.

Ditzler Big Flake pigments can be added directly to the basecoat or used as a ground coat for Radiance II mid-coats by PPG to create an old-style special-effect finish. It can also be added to color blenders or Radiance II coatings to create a mid-coat/pearl-coat effect.

West System offers Aluminum Powder



Just as the sun’s ultraviolet rays can burn skin, they can also damage epoxy coatings that are unprotected by paint. But, it’s not always possible to get an outdoor epoxy project painted right away. This is where West System brand 420 Aluminum Powder can buy some time for the epoxy coating on a boat construction or repair project. When mixed with epoxy, 420 Aluminum Powder creates a coating that hinders UV rays from degrading epoxy for those times when a project can’t get painted right away.

A little like sunscreen, 420 Aluminum Powder offers temporary UV shielding to areas temporarily unprotected by paint.  It also improves the moisture resistance of a coated surface and increases its hardness and abrasion resistance. This aluminum powder additive turns a metallic gray color when the epoxy cures.

Cortec Introduces EcoLine 3690



Cortec Corporation recently developed a biodegradable, ready-to-use, self-healing, moisture-displacing, temporary protective coating for corrosion control of metal surfaces. Derived from canola oil, EcoLine 3690 is 80% bio-based, making it a non-hazardous, non-toxic coating which lowers its environmental impact. This high-performance coating is designed to provide durable, trouble free performance in any climate and under any weather condition. It can be applied at low temperatures—Eco- Line 3690’s freezing point is -18°C.

Henkel launches adhesive for medical device assembly



For medical bonding, potting and sealing applications, Henkel Corporation has introduced a rapid curing, highly flexible visible light cure adhesive formulation, Loctite 3974. Curing tack-free in seconds, this new adhesive permanently bonds materials with differing coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and accommodates substrate expansion and contraction.

Loctite 3974 Light Cure Adhesive is a low modulus, single-component acrylic adhesive that cures rapidly on exposure to UV or visible light. This adhesive can be used on glass, thermoplastic and metal assemblies that must withstand extreme thermal cycling and environmental exposure. Loctite 3974 Light Cure Adhesive has a shore hardness of A70 and an elongation of 100%, making it ideally suited for highly flexible components.

Loctite 3974 Light Cure Adhesive is ISO-10993 biologically tested, making it suitable for the assembly of disposable medical devices. This adhesive fluoresces under black light for easy quality control inspection and is available in a variety of package sizes to accommodate manual to fully automated dispensing.

StoCreativ Granite expands color options



Sto Corp. has expanded its StoCreativ Granite product color offering for a total of ten colors. StoCreativ Granite is an acrylic-based interior and exterior wall finish, formulated for durability and low maintenance for new construction or renovation. It is trowel-applied and designed to provide the look of cut or polished granite, but in a versatile lightweight finish coating.

Tennant introduces WearGuard-CRU 250



Tennant Company has reformulated its WearGuard-CRU (chemical-resistant urethane) topcoats to meet the strict VOC requirements of the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO), the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC) and the Chemicals Control Branch of Environment Canada. While the original WearGuard-CRU coatings have always met EPA VOC regulations, the reformulated coatings, under the name WearGuard-CRU 250 remain below 250 g/L, complying with many of the more stringent state and county standards as well.

CertainTeed’s ProRoc Brand Level V Wall and Ceiling Primer/Surfacer



Valley Forge, PA-based CertainTeed has added Level V Wall & Ceiling Primer/Surfacer to its ProRoc Brand Finishing Products portfolio. ProRoc Level V Wall & Ceiling Primer/Surfacer, suitable for spray and roll-on applications, is a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) product that creates a smooth wall finish. It takes a Level 4 finish to Level 5 without the need to putty or skim coat. This product eliminates the intensive labor necessary to achieve a high-quality wall finish using traditional methods, the company said.

ProRoc Level V Wall & Ceiling Primer/Surfacer has good hide and self-leveling characteristics, while meeting American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Gypsum Association (GA) specifications for Level 5 finishes. This product is now available at building materials dealers who stock ProRoc Finishing products in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. and from coast to coast within Canada.

Raabe introduces new lacquer for plastic surfaces



The Raabe Company, LLC, has unveiled a new platform—Lacquer for Plastic Surfaces—for its line of touch-up coatings, which can provide precision color matching. The new platform combines the properties of drying very quickly, toughness and exterior durability. It adheres well to thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), sheet molding compound (SMC) and fiberglass-filled nylon. The lacquer also adheres to traditional substrates such as metal, wood and coated finishes. Lacquer for Plastic Surfaces is a touch-up platform designed for the automotive industry, electrical applications and structural components. It is available in a wide range of custom-matched gloss and color combinations, including very low gloss, which is often needed for interior automotive environments.

Diamonex introduces DLC Coatings



The Diamonex Products division of Morgan Advanced Ceramics has introduced its Diamonex Diamond-like Coatings (DLC) for the performance racing industry. Ideal for applications in the high performance racing industry, the DLC coatings increase wear life and reduce surface friction of internal engine components, including intake valves, wrist pins, spring retainers and cylinder sleeves. The DLC coatings also offer the same attributes when camshafts are coated. The DLC coating provides 40% less friction than chrome coating and 10% greater surface hardness than tin, leading to less friction-oriented power loss and more wear protection. In addition, the coatings also reduce engine sludge build-up, allowing the engine to maintain balance for more horsepower. Other Diamonex DLC racing industry applications include coating shock shafts and fork tubes for motocross and motorcycle racing. This helps reduce friction, which minimizes scoring on critical surfaces of these components.

New Weld-Aid 1st Zinc



Detroit, MI-based Weld-Aid Products has released its newest product, 1st Zinc—a 95% zinc-rich coating designed to provide the highest level of corrosion protection for metal in cold-galvanizing applications.

1st Zinc joins Weld-Aid Product’s longstanding family of anti-spatter products for the welding industry and builds upon the company’s tradition of providing high-quality products for metal protection during fabrication processes. The product was developed for use on metal parts and assemblies as either a protective primer coat to be later top-coated or as a standalone coating.

1st Zinc meets the requirements listed in the ASTM-780, ASTM-D-520 (for zinc content), Fed. Spec. DOD-P-21035A (Galvanizing Repair Spec), MIL-P-26915A (USAF Zinc Dust Primer), and SSPC-Paint 20 (Specification for Zinc-Rich Primer) specifications. The product is available in both aerosol cans and bulk gallons.

New Valsport WP-4.1 and WP-8.1



Valspar Flooring has introduced new Valsport WP-4.1 Sealer and WP-8.1 Finish—two eco-friendly durable oil modified urethanes (OMU) for use on gymnasium and athletic wood floors.

Both WP-4.1 and WP-8.1 have VOC levels of <350 g/L, meeting air quality mandates for all North American regions, except southern California counties under SCAQMD rule. Use of these products can also help contribute toward U.S Green Building Council’s LEED sustainable building efforts.

Valsport WP-4.1 Fast Dry 350 Sanding Sealer is a premium polyurethane sealer that dries in as little as two hours to reduce time between coats, while deeply penetrating into woods for unmatched hardness underfoot. Designed to securely seal bare wood floors and produce an optimum clear surface for finish coats, it is formulated for the extreme demands of heavy-traffic, high-impact sports hardwood floors. Approximate coverage is 400-500 square feet per gallon on build coats, and 300-400 on bare wood.

Valsport WP-8.1 Sports Floor 350 Finish, in addition to its VOC compliance, offers superior gloss, excellent rubber burn resistance, and overall better film hardness that extends floor life. By design, it ages naturally to golden amber, beautifying the wood as it protects it. WP-8.1 is available in one and five-gallon containers with approximate coverage of 400-500 square feet per gallon.

Birchwood Casey’s Patina Green Finishing Solution



New Patina Green solution from Birchwood Casey is designed to produce an attractive Verdi green patina finish on copper, brass and bronze surfaces and is ideal for light fixtures, cabinet hardware and cast bronze sculpture pieces. Patina Green can also provide an interesting and attractive appearance to architectural elements such as roof shingles, fascia, window and door frames, and all types of decorative hardware.

The Patina Green liquid is a unique formulation that forms a mixture of several different copper compounds on the metal surface, similar to that formed through the natural aging and oxidation in outdoor weathering conditions.

Depending on the technique, there are two different types of finishes achievable. For bright green, or mint green finishes, the Patina Green liquid can be applied directly onto a clean copper, brass or bronze surface using brush, dipping or spray. Or, for slightly muted tones that are somewhat more opaque, the Patina Green solution can be applied as a secondary treatment over the top of a brown or black colored base coat. This technique produces less reflection from the base metal and is sometimes more compatible with other surrounding materials, such as tone or wood. Patina Green is available in one, five and 55-gallon containers.

Henkel launches new quick drying, toluene-free conformal coating system



Henkel has introduced a new toluene-free conformal coating material called Hysol PC62. Based on the company’s popular Hysol PC52 platform, Hysol PC62 is a one component solvent-based acrylic conformal coating that provides environmental and mechanical protection for printed circuit boards (PCBs). Designed as a toluene-free alternative, the product delivers the benefits of a non-toluene material with all of the quick drying advantages of a traditional toluene-based system. In testing against other toluene-free materials, Hysol PC62 delivered drying times as much as four times faster than the closest competitor, the company said.

Designed for high reliability, Hysol PC62 is ideal for any environment where a printed circuit board will be subjected to harsh conditions, particularly automotive, military, aerospace, industrial and consumer avionics applications. Hysol PC62 is compliant with UL746 and IPC-CC-830 requirements and is ideally suited to application with non-atomized selective spray coating equipment.

New polymer system cures by UV light and/or heat



Master Bond Inc., Hackensack, N.J. has introduced a new one component, optically clear, non-yellowing UV and/or heat curable polymer system called UV15-7DC. This high performance system is designed for bonding, sealing and coating applications. It is 100% reactive and does not contain any solvents or other volatiles. UV15-7DC is not inhibited by air and exhibits a desirably fast UV cure at ambient temperatures. Typical cure times range from five seconds to 2-3 minutes depending upon the wave length, intensity of the UV light and the thickness of the subject being cured. Typical heat curing schedules are 10-30 minutes at 250-260°F. Heat curing is recommended for use in applications with shadowed out areas.

Master Bond UV15-7DC is easy to use and has a low viscosity. It has outstanding durability, toughness, thermal shock resistance as well as excellent adhesion to many different substrates. These substrates include glass, metals, plastics, polyester films and polycarbonates. It has a Shore D hardness of >70 and an elongation of 65-75%. Its tensile strength is 5,460 psi.

Corr-Paint CP2050 protective coating



Corr-Paint CP2050 is a new high temperature protective coating developed by Aremco Products, Inc., and used to coat metal components and structures used in automotive and industrial applications to 400ºF (204ºC).

Corr-Paint CP2050 provides excellent adhesion to marginally prepared metal surfaces and exceptional corrosion resistance. It is resistant to a wide range of chemicals including acetic acid, jet fuel, alcohols, diesel fuel, gasoline, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, toluene and xylene. It also provides good thermal shock, salt spray and UV resistance.

Corr-Paint CP2050 is a two-part system that is mixed in a 1-to-1 ratio by weight. It mixes to a thick paste and is applied using a trowel or spatula. It sets and cures fully at room temperature in 24 hours or can be heat cured at 175ºF for 4 hours to reduce set time. Typical film thickness is 50 mils for a single coat.

Corr-Paint CP2050 is offered in three standard forms: CP2050-LF, CP2050-FF and CP2050-NF. LF stands for long or coarse glass fibers; FF stands for fine glass fibers; and NF stands for no fibers.
